DMK leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin , was arrested on Tuesday after police registered a case against him over alleged misogynistic remarks made during a public rally in Thanjavur. The action followed a complaint accusing Stalin of making derogatory and offensive remarks that were widely interpreted as referring to actor Trisha during a rally held over the Cauvery water dispute. According to police, an FIR was registered in Thanjavur after the remarks triggered protests and demands for legal action. A police team reached Stalin's residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, on Tuesday morning and took him into custody before escorting him to Thanjavur, where the case has been registered. Several DMK workers accompanying him were also detained. The controversy stems from a speech delivered by Stalin during a protest on the Cauvery issue, where supporters reportedly raised slogans mentioning actor Trisha. His response was interpreted by political opponents as containing a double entendre directed at the actor, prompting allegations that the remarks were vulgar and misogynistic. Stalin later maintained that his comments referred to the Cauvery river and not the actor. The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) lodged police complaints and also approached the National Commission for Women, alleging that Stalin's remarks insulted women and sought appropriate legal action. The party also called for statewide protests over the incident. Before his arrest, Stalin had approached the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail . The high court agreed to hear his plea urgently and reportedly orally observed that the police should not precipitate the matter until the petition was taken up. However, he was subsequently taken into custody by the police. The Cauvery water dispute is a decades-old conflict between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over sharing the waters of the Cauvery River. Since the river originates in Karnataka and flows into Tamil Nadu, both states depend on it for irrigation and drinking water. The dispute becomes more intense during years of low rainfall, when Karnataka seeks to retain more water while Tamil Nadu demands its allocated share. The issue has been the subject of prolonged litigation. In 2018, the Supreme Court modified the allocation of Cauvery waters and directed the Centre to set up the Cauvery Water Management Authority to oversee implementation of the water-sharing formula. The dispute continues to resurface almost every year during the monsoon and crop seasons.
