It was estimated at 13.1% of GDP in 2025. That gap is one reason behind the government’s strategy. “There is a significant gap between the current tax burden, the regional standard and the country’s potential,” Kpowbié Tchasso Stéphane Akaya, secretary-general of the Ministry of Finance and Budget, said during the discussions. The SRMT projects tax revenue rising from CFAF 1.0437 trillion in 2026 to CFAF 2.109 trillion in 2031. Broadening the tax base, digitizing collection and rationalizing tax expenditures are among the main measures planned. Tax collections have already been rising.
