
Cameroon Discusses Electricity Sector Financing With Citi
Cameroon held talks with U.S. banking group Citi on September 29 over financing options for the electricity sector, including debt refinancing, guarantees, resource mobilization and funding for new projects. The meeting in Yaoundé brought together Water and Energy Minister Gaston Eloundou Essomba and Faisal Masood, Citi’s Head of Corporate Banking for Sub-Saharan Africa. The talks come as authorities seek to restore the sector’s financial balance while preparing for a widening electricity shortfall as demand rises. Government projections presented during the meeting show that the deficit could reach 130 MW in 2027, 250 MW in 2028, 400 MW in 2029 and 500 MW in 2030 if additional generation capacity is not brought online. Authorities are working to connect new industrial demand totaling about 150 MW by July 2027. According to the Ministry of Water and Energy, these connections could generate an additional CFAF 4 billion to CFAF 5 billion in monthly revenue.
