African Union: Lomé Hosts Consultations on Migration Advisory Council

Lomé is hosting consultations on the free movement of people across Africa and the creation of the African Union’s Migration Advisory Council (MAC). The talks run through Wednesday, September 30, 2026. About 100 delegates, government officials and experts from across the continent are taking part, with discussions aimed at defining the mandate and priorities of the future body. The council is expected to produce data, share experiences and make recommendations on migration policies. The discussions are focusing in particular on migration and border governance, national experiences with mobility and integrated border management systems. The consultations come 20 years after the adoption of the African Union Migration Policy Framework and align with the goals of Agenda 2063. Togo Highlights Its Experience The consultations come as Togo has moved to ease travel for African nationals. On May 18, 2026, the country removed the requirement for African nationals holding valid passports to obtain visas in advance. The measure allows stays of up to 30 days while maintaining immigration procedures and controls. “Togo will also share its experience with visa-free entry for African citizens,” said Sabelo Mbokazi, head of the Labour, Employment and Migration Division at the African Union Commission.
