Uganda Muslim MPs Demand Probe, Takedown of Leaked Susan Magara Video

Muslim legislators have called for an investigation into the circulation of a video linked to the Susan Magara murder case, saying it risks falsely associating the crime with Islam and could inflame religious tensions. Members of the Uganda Parliamentary Muslim Caucus condemned the circulation of the video on social media over the weekend, in which convicts in the murder case are heard claiming they committed the crime while working for Islam. In the recording, the convicts allege that they received ransom money from Susan Magara's father and used it to promote Islam. Addressing a press conference at Parliament on Monday morning, the caucus described the circulation of the video as "uncalled for" and said it was intended to tarnish the image of Islam. To link this criminal act to our faith is malicious and deliberate," said caucus chairperson Mp Hassan Kirumira. The legislators also questioned why the convicts appeared in Islamic attire, including kanzus and turbans, when they were presented in court for sentencing. "Why were they dressed in Muslim attire before court? This was intended to create a false impression that the crime was committed in the name of Islam. We reject that narrative," Kirumira said. The MPs also questioned how the footage, which they said should be part of the court record or evidence, came to be circulated publicly. "This footage is supposed to be in the custody of court. Who leaked it and for what purpose? We demand answers," said Mp Abdallah Kiwanuka. The caucus called on the government to investigate those responsible for the circulation of the video and establish the circumstances under which it was released. The MPs also asked the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to order the removal of the video from social media platforms. "We ask UCC to act swiftly and remove this material. It is inciting and it is an attack on a faith that preaches peace," said MP Bumali Mpindi. The caucus further urged Muslims across the country to remain calm and united, warning against being provoked by the video. "Do not be provoked. Our religion teaches forgiveness and justice. Let the law take its course," said Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende. Other MPs present at the press conference included Abdallah Kiwanuka, Zahara Luyirika and Hakim Kiiza, among others.
