The handover ceremony for the chairmanship of the Regional Technical Advisory Committee on Labour Mobility was held in Dodoma, marking a significant shift in regional cooperation. The event brought together Permanent Secretaries and technical experts from labour and employment institutions, immigration departments, ministries of foreign affairs, the private sector, and development partners. This move is expected to strengthen regional cooperation in managing safe, orderly, and regular labour migration. Tanzania's chairmanship aims to build on the strong foundation established during Uganda's tenure by continuing to enhance policy dialogue and coordinated measures for managing safe labour migration.

The incorporation of labour mobility issues into Tanzania's development agenda is a key aspect of its chairmanship. The National Development Vision 2050 seeks to build a competitive, inclusive, and high-income economy while improving the lives of all citizens. Labour mobility has been identified as a crucial factor in achieving this vision. To address these challenges, the Government of Tanzania has implemented initiatives such as the National Skills Development Programme, strengthening employment services, and labour market information systems.

The Regional Ministerial Forum on Migration held in Uganda earlier this year underscored the importance of regional cooperation on labour migration. The forum brought together 11 member states, alongside observer countries, to discuss key issues and challenges facing the region. Partners such as the African Union Commission, IGAD, EAC, development partners, UN agencies, and diplomatic missions were also present. This collaboration aims to ensure that migration continues to serve as a positive driver of development, protection, and regional cooperation.
