Sasol Paid Over $670M in Mozambique Taxes Over 11 Years

Maputo — The South African petrochemical giant Sasol paid, over the past 11 years, more than 670 million US dollars to Mozambican State in taxes. According to the State General Account, the contributions stem from natural gas and other hydrocarbon exploration and production operations in the Pande, Temane and Inhassoro fields, in the southern province of Inhambane. Sasol Petroleum Temane (SPT), operator of the Petroleum Production Agreement (PPA), has ranked among the country's largest taxpayers, coming first in 2023 and third in 2022, 2024 and 2025. "The direct tax contribution includes corporate income tax, personal income tax, value-added tax (VAT) and royalties paid to the State through the Petroleum Production Tax (PPT). Sasol's 2025 financial results help illustrate the scale of this contribution. Sasol Petroleum Temane recorded revenue of approximately 321 million, against 63 million in operating costs, 60 million in depreciation and amortization, 13 million in financial costs and two million in other costs", reads the report. Profit before tax stood at around 183 million dollars, while profit after tax reached approximately 123 million dollars. In 2025 alone, Sasol Petroleum Temane's tax contribution was around 76 million dollars. Of this amount, approximately 66 million consisted of corporate income tax, 4.5 million of personal income tax, 4.3 million of VAT, 563,000 in royalties paid to the State and 474,000 in other taxes.
