Ibewuike's status as a wanted individual stemmed from a substantial 49.7kg heroin MMIA seizure that occurred in February 2024. The illicit substance was discovered concealed within cartons of metal-cutting machines at the Import Shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) cargo terminal in Lagos. This extensive operation by the NDLEA spanned 12 days and led to the initial arrests of several members of the alleged drug trafficking syndicate.

Among those initially apprehended was Ibewuike’s wife, Confidence Ndidiamaka Ibewuike, who was implicated in routinely receiving drug-laden parcels marked with a distinct code, “ND,” on her husband's behalf. Festus Ibewuike himself was initially charged in absentia, alongside Osita Chidozie Cyril and another individual identified as Arinze. During preliminary interviews following his arrest, Ibewuike confirmed his identity, disclosing that he had previously used the name Chidibest Ibewuike before changing it. On Saturday, September 5, he was brought to the NDLEA Central Exhibit Store in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he formally identified the parcels of heroin bearing the “ND” code, further solidifying the evidence linking him to the seized contraband.
