Preliminary ballistic analysis has established a link between the recovered cartridge cases and bullet head and the firearm used in the killing. A Mini Jericho pistol, serial number 47302127, which is alleged to have been issued to senior police officer Kenneth Sang, is also under forensic examination. The investigators have obtained CCTV footage and call data records as part of their efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing.

The DCI suspects that the murder may be connected to a longstanding land dispute involving L.R. No. 1504/13, a parcel that is the subject of ongoing proceedings before a Machakos court. Dr Mutiso had previously raised concerns over her safety and reported an attempted attack in which she allegedly believed she was being followed. The investigators believe that Mulwa may have been involved in planning the alleged attempted attack and was present during an eviction and demolition exercise involving property associated with L.R. No. 1504/13. Furthermore, detectives claim that Mulwa maintained frequent communication with Sang, whose firearm is suspected of having been used in the killing.

Mulwa was arrested on August 20, 2026, and is currently being held at Industrial Area Police Station. The DCI suspects that Mulwa had a significant role in events surrounding the murder and was present when KSh300,000 was allegedly paid as a down payment for the planned killing of Dr Mutiso. Investigators have identified several other suspects, some of whom are still at large while others are in custody. The application to detain Mulwa for 14 days refers to separate cases involving Rose Mbithe Mulwa and Chris Mulwa, alongside police officers Elijah Kibelion Kimoi, Daniel Mwangi Njoroge, and Kelvin Ngugi Kinuthia.
