Cameroon's Sonatrel Awards CFA1 Billion Insurance Contracts to Area Assurances

Area Assurances has replaced Chanas Assurances on two Sonatrel insurance contracts worth a combined CFA990.66 million in 2026, effectively transferring nearly CFA1 billion in annual business from one insurer to the other while the overall contract value remains almost unchanged. On September 17, state-owned electricity transmission company Sonatrel awarded Area a 12-month employee health insurance contract worth CFA475.17 million, including taxes. Combined with the CFA515.49 million comprehensive property insurance contract Area secured in May, the two awards total CFA990.66 million. That is almost identical to the CFA990 million Sonatrel awarded Chanas for the same two insurance categories in 2025. The apparent stability, however, masks opposite changes in the individual contracts. The comprehensive property insurance contract increased 3.1%, from CFA500 million to CFA515.49 million, while the health insurance contract declined 3%, from CFA490 million to CFA475.17 million.
