Togo Businesses Receive Training on Preferential Trade Tariffs

Togolese private-sector operators are currently attending a four-day meeting in Lomé, Togo, from September 21-24, 2026, focused on understanding and applying rules of origin to qualify for preferential trade treatment under regional and continental agreements. This crucial initiative, spearheaded by Togo's Ministry of Investment Promotion, Industry and Economic Sovereignty through its Directorate General of Industry, aims to equip local businesses with the knowledge necessary to navigate complex trade regulations. The training, supported by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), directly addresses the challenge that goods processed in Togo using imported materials do not automatically qualify for preferential tariffs; businesses must demonstrate that local processing meets specific origin criteria, such as the extent of processing, local value added, and the origin of materials used.
