SERNIC Incinerates 1.3 Tonnes of Fentanyl in Maputo

Mozambique's National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) on Tuesday incinerated over 1.3 tonnes of fentanyl and an unspecified quantity of chemical precursors in Moamba landfill, Maputo province, following their seizure at Maputo International Airport. This significant action, coordinated with the Central Office for the Prevention and Combating of Drugs (GCPCD), underscores Mozambique's intensified efforts against international drug trafficking, particularly involving highly dangerous synthetic opioids. The substances, originating from Brazil and transiting through Angola, were packaged in 207 boxes and seized on August 13, with laboratory tests confirming them as fentanyl. Samples were meticulously collected prior to destruction to serve as crucial judicial evidence in ongoing criminal proceedings, indicating a comprehensive approach to prosecution beyond mere seizure.
