EThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba recently lauded the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) for its accelerated efforts to improve passenger rail services within the city. Mayor Xaba, accompanied by Members of the Executive Committee (EXCO) and PRASA's senior leadership, conducted an inspection tour last Friday. Their journey by train from Durban Station to Umlazi served to evaluate the current state of the corridor and monitor the advancement of modernizing the crucial signalling and telecommunications infrastructure, a key component of the broader revitalization strategy.

At the heart of these enhancements is a substantial PRASA Durban R11 billion signalling program and telecommunications initiative, which is being rolled out across multiple corridors to upgrade critical operational systems. Concurrently, PRASA is channeling approximately R2 billion into the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Umlazi Corridor, a vital artery that consistently transports the highest volume of train passengers in the entire province.
