Nigeria is grappling with a severe and worsening air pollution crisis, a situation underscored by its ranking as the third most polluted nation in Africa in the 2025 World Air Quality Report. This alarming designation highlights the critical need for coordinated action, as contaminated air poses significant threats to public health, economic productivity, agricultural output, livelihoods, and the broader environment across the country.

Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, brought this issue to the forefront during his address at the 2026 International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, an event themed "Team Clean Air, Healthy People." Lawal identified a range of factors contributing to Nigeria's deteriorating air quality, including rapid population growth, expanding urban centers, increasing transportation demands, industrial activities, rising energy consumption, waste generation, and prevailing agricultural practices. He emphasized that the problem is further exacerbated by the persistent use of polluting fuels, particularly in the transportation sector and for household energy needs, warning that the repercussions extend beyond human health to impact ecosystems and community resilience.

In response to the escalating crisis, the Federal Ministry of Environment is actively developing a comprehensive national framework designed to empower states to establish vehicle and generator emissions testing centres. These future centres will operate under stringent national minimum standards, forming a crucial component of Nigeria's strategy to manage and reduce harmful emissions.
