Liberia M-FOMTUL Digital Liberia Partnership Digitally Identifies Commercial Motorcycle Operators

The Merged Federation of Motorcycle and Tricycle Union of Liberia (M-FOMTUL) has partnered with Digital Liberia to introduce digital identification, data management, and GPS tracking systems for commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators across the country. This initiative aims to strengthen registration and identification processes, improve sector data, combat theft, and enhance accountability and road safety. The partnership will establish a comprehensive database containing verifiable information on riders and their vehicles, enabling law enforcement agencies to investigate incidents more effectively.

Digital Liberia believes that the informal sector should be viewed as an economic opportunity rather than a challenge. The organization estimates that many workers and entrepreneurs in this sector remain excluded from financial services due to lack of verifiable records and recognized digital identities. By creating reliable digital records, the initiative aims to connect operators in the informal sector to the formal economy, providing access to financial institutions, government services, and other economic opportunities.

Commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators in Liberia face significant challenges, including theft and difficulty in identifying suspects. M-FOMTUL President General John A.F. Kayon attributes these issues to the lack of a comprehensive system for identifying riders, registering vehicles, and tracking locations. The partnership with Digital Liberia is expected to transform and professionalize the sector through greater use of technology, making it easier to identify stolen vehicles and recover them.

This development may require commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators in Liberia to register their vehicles and obtain digital identification, which could impact their operations and compliance with regulations.
