Kalifah Aganaga Demands Shs 500M From KFC Over Copyright Infringement

Musician Sadati Mukiibi, popularly known as Kalifah Aganaga, has demanded Shs500 million from KFC Uganda over the alleged unauthorised use of his song "Nassanga Remix" in a promotional video. The demand is contained in a notice issued by Elgon Advocates on August 7, 2026, and addressed to the managing director of KFC Uganda. Aganaga, through his lawyers, allege that KFC Uganda used the song as background audio in a promotional or commercial video published on the company's official TikTok account without obtaining his consent. "It has come to our client's attention that you have used the aforementioned musical work as background audio in a promotional/commercial video published on your official TikTok page," the lawyers stated. They allege that the use was made without a "synchronisation license, a performance license, or any prior written authorization" from Sadati or his authorised representatives. The lawyers contend that the alleged use amounts to copyright infringement under Uganda's Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act, Cap 222. "Your unauthorised reproduction and communication of the song to the public for commercial gain constitutes a direct infringement," the notice states. The lawyers are demanding Shs500 million in compensation and aggravated damages over what they describe as the unauthorised commercial use of Kalifah Aganaga's music. They say the amount covers alleged loss of licensing revenue and brand dilution arising from the use of the song. The lawyers are also demanding Shs50 million in legal costs, bringing the total amount sought from KFC Uganda to Shs550 million. In addition to the financial demand, Elgon Advocates has asked KFC Uganda to remove the allegedly infringing video from TikTok and any other social media platforms under its control. The lawyers also want the company to stop any future unauthorised use of Sadati's music catalogue in its advertisements and issue a written admission of liability. "Our client is aggrieved by this blatant commercial exploitation of his creative labor," the lawyers stated. KFC Uganda has been given seven days from receipt of the notice to comply with the demands. The lawyers have warned that failure to comply could result in court action seeking an injunction, damages and costs. "Should you fail, refuse, or neglect to comply, we have firm instructions to institute legal proceedings against you for an injunction, damages, and costs," the notice states. The lawyers further allege that Sadati's neighbouring rights were infringed in his capacity as the performer and/or producer of the sound recording. A copy of the demand notice was sent to Sadati and the Uganda Registration Services Bureau Intellectual Property Directorate.
