Prof. Barinedum Nwibere, speaking on behalf of the council, articulated this commitment during an assessment visit conducted on Thursday. The visit encompassed various HYPREP livelihood projects and remediation sites throughout Ogoniland, providing direct oversight of the ongoing work. This move signals a renewed focus on accelerating the implementation of critical projects under the HYPREP fast-track Ogoni cleanup projects initiative, addressing previous delays and ensuring progress.

Among the critical initiatives identified by the council for immediate attention are Lot 12 in Ogale, located within the Eleme Local Government Area, and the overarching Ogoni Power Project. The electrification project, in particular, is viewed as highly significant, with efforts focused on ensuring its swift realization due to its potential to catalyze broader development.

Challenges associated with the power project, including community negotiations, were acknowledged. During his visit, Prof. Nwibere also engaged with beneficiaries of HYPREP’s Software Development Training program, which involves 152 Ogoni youths at the Information Communication Technology Department of Rivers State University. He conveyed concerns regarding the engagement of some beneficiaries in HYPREP’s training initiatives, urging them to fully leverage the opportunities provided for their skill development and future prospects.

Prof. Damian Aguiyi, Director of Technical Services, who represented HYPREP Project Coordinator Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey and guided the council members through various project sites, welcomed the visit. He expressed confidence that the engagement would foster a more robust working relationship between the Project Coordination Office and the Governing Council. Aguiyi believes this enhanced collaboration will be instrumental in overcoming project execution challenges, ultimately leading to more effective and successful project delivery for the benefit of Ogoniland.
