Bulawayo Parents Protest School Levy Hike, Question Council's Authority

The Bulawayo City Council-run school is alleged to have reviewed the levies upwards without prior notice, a move parents have questioned. Armed municipal police were called in to restore order as Grade Seven examinations were in progress. One disgruntled parent said the school had sent out letters showing outstanding balances, even though some parents had no arrears. “The school sent letters stating that we owed varying amounts in levies, yet we had no outstanding balances. The manner in which the levies were increased without notifying us was not proper,” said the parent. Another parent said the municipal police were called after parents demanded to see the headteacher. “We have resolved to pay the money, but we will be demanding a meeting with the school head and the School Development Committee,” he said.
