Located in Entebbe, the Centre will serve as a hub for advanced virology research and training, enhancing the capacity of EAC Partner States to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease outbreaks. The operationalisation of the UVRI Centre was marked by a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, representing President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. This development comes at a critical time as infectious diseases continue to pose significant challenges across the region, with the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrating the need for stronger regional collaboration in disease prevention and response.

The launch of the UVRI Centre is part of the EAC's broader efforts to strengthen regional health security through the establishment of Regional Centres of Excellence. These Centres are designed to provide advanced expertise, research, training, and technical support in strategic areas of regional importance. The UVRI facility is one of seven Regional Medical Diagnostic Centres of Excellence established under the EAC Health Investment Priority Framework 2018-2028. This framework aims to address the region's health challenges through targeted investments in healthcare infrastructure, human resources, and research capacity.

The operationalisation of the UVRI Centre has significant implications for public health in the East African region. The Centre will play a key role in strengthening preparedness for public health threats, including Ebola, Marburg, and other emerging and re-emerging viral diseases.
